Ian was really a great guy. He was a Marine Corp Veteran who earned numerous meritorious masts, commendations, and medals. Ian was a "free spirit" who loved skateboarding, partying, volkswagons, motorcycles, friends and family. Check out Ian's MySpace www.myspace.com/iantilmann. Ian was an avid skateboarder, longboarding was his passion. He skated every night of the week after work until the wee hours of the morning. He loved to feel the wind rush past as he sped downhill carving each and every curve of the road. On May 16, 2005, Ian was skating downhill when he was pitched headfirst off of his longboard onto the road. "WHEEL BITE" Ian was NOT wearing a helmet. On May 26, 2005, Ian died from massive brain injuries. Our wonderful son was 28 years old at the time of his death. Ian "Never" wore safety gear when skating. If Ian had been wearing a helmet, he would NOT have died! After Ian's death, we founded The Ian Tilmann Foundation, Inc. The Foundation created the "Helmet For A Promise" program.
If you promise to wear a helmet whenever you skate, the Foundation will give you a custom-ordered skater's helmet for FREE! The Foundation gives away S-One & Bern Skater's Helmets and as of December 2008 has distributed over 1,600 free helmets nationwide! The Foundation's "Helmet For A Promise" program is now a nationwide program. Register for your Free Helmet by visiting our website & downloading the "Helmet For A Promise" registration. The Foundation also is operating out of 6 skate parks in Florida and the newest skate park partner is in Malibu, CA.
On April 21, 2007, the City of Safety Harbor dedicated and renamed its skate park The Ian Tilmann Skate Park, located on 7th St. in Safety Harbor, FL. If you are ever here...come skate in memory of Ian at The Ian Tilmann Skate Park!
Rest In Peace our beloved Son, we miss you so much...you will remain in our hearts forever!
